Conveniently located to serve the areas of Marin, San Francisco, Sonoma and Napa
A male facelift is a surgical procedure that lifts and repositions facial tissues to restore a more youthful, chiseled appearance. Also known as a rhytidectomy, this procedure addresses the common signs of aging such as wrinkles, creases, sagging skin, jowling, facial folds, and more. In male patients, the procedure helps to resharpen softened features and create a more masculine, angular appearance. This procedure is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed, with more than 79,000 facelifts performed in the US in 2024 alone. (1)
Dr. Yngvar A. Hvistendahl of Plastic Surgery Specialty Group & MedSpa has performed facelifts for more than two decades. Dr. Hvistendahl is a board-certified plastic surgeon who brings technical precision and expertise to male facelifts.

About Male Facelifts
Male facelifts are a facial rejuvenation procedure that reduce the appearance of visual aging from the middle and lower regions of the face. As you age, your facial skin and muscles can start to lose their elasticity, causing signs of visual aging to develop. Dr. Hvistendahl offers a wide range of techniques that combat this, each offering different benefits and effects. Ultimately, the goal of a facelift is to restore a more refreshed appearance that still feels like you.
What Makes a Male Facelift Different?
A successful male facelift goes beyond simply tightening the skin. Dr. Hvistendahl tailors the procedure to your unique male anatomy for natural-looking facial rejuvenation. Facelifts for men include special considerations (2) such as:
- Male Anatomy: The skin is thicker and more vascular which can impact the healing process
- Careful Incision Placement: Incisions are carefully positioned around hair growth and out of the way of receding hairlines for discreet scars
- Strong Facial Features: Contouring through the face to maintain masculine definition instead of creating a softer jawline
- Hair Growth Patterns: Preserve facial hair growth by placing incisions in non-distributive locations
Benefits
There are several benefits to undergoing a facelift, regardless of the specific concerns you address. These benefits include:
- Refined Facial Definition: A facelift can help enhance the natural sculpt and contours of your face, especially in areas such as the cheekbones or jawline.
- Tighter Skin: Dr. Hvistendahl can remove loose or sagging skin, restoring a tighter and smoother look and feel.
- Refreshed Appearance: Facelifts effectively address signs of aging, such as wrinkles, creases, fine lines, and crow’s feet, restoring a more youthful-looking appearance.
- Elevated Confidence: Many patients experience an improvement in their self-esteem after seeing their rejuvenated appearance, which can lead to a greater sense of confidence.
- Lasting Results: Facelifts provide long-lasting rejuvenation, especially through techniques like the deep-plane or SMAS facelift.
- Tailored Treatment Plans: Your treatment plan will uniquely meet your anatomy, concerns, and the appearance you desire, ensuring techniques suit your needs and that the results align with your expectations.
- Variation in Treatment: Dr. Hvistendahl can perform several variations of the facelift to address a wide range of different concerns, each offering its own unique benefits and effects.

Recovery
Facelifts are outpatient procedures, meaning you will return home on the same day as your procedure. PSSG’s 360-degree holistic approach to healing promotes faster recovery for optimized results.
To improve healing, closely follow Dr. Hvistendahl’s postoperative instructions. Your recovery plan may include our complimentary surgical extras that are wellness treatments designed to enhance your healing.
Initially, you will experience temporary swelling and bruising that will subside over time. Dr. Hvistendahl may recommend resting with your head elevated to reduce swelling.
After one week, Dr. Hvistendahl will remove your stitches at a follow-up appointment. Light activities typically resume at this time.
After two weeks most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social settings and most daily routines. You will refrain from strenuous exercising, heavy lifting, or intense physical exertion until you receive clearance around six weeks.
If any questions or concerns arise throughout your recovery, we encourage you to contact us. Dr. Hvistendahl and his team are here to guide you throughout your recovery.
