Rhinoplasty in San Francisco

A rhinoplasty plastic surgery procedure, or nose job, improves facial balance by matching the size and shape of your nose to your face. This is often performed in conjunction with chin or cheek implants. Unlike face lifting, which restores one’s facial appearance to its previous state, rhinoplasty changes skeletal structure and improvement can be dramatic.

During a rhinoplasty procedure in San Francisco, the nose can either be increased or decreased depending on the patient's wishes. Usually the patient wishes to decrease the size of the nose and eliminate a bump if there is one. The slope of the nose, as well as the size of the tip can be changed. Rhinoplasty can also be used to straighten a crooked nose or even to alter the appearance of the patient's nostrils. Humps, bumps and any other irregularities in the nose can also be corrected during the procedure.

About San Francisco Rhinoplasty Procedures

The rhinoplasty surgical procedure typically takes between one and two hours to complete. A more complicated procedure or a reconstructive procedure may take longer, depending on what needs to be done. Plastic Surgery Specialists can explain the procedure to you in further detail.

During the rhinoplasty procedure, the skin of your nose will be separated from the bone and the cartilage that supports it. This bone and cartilage framework is then sculpted to achieve the shape that you are looking to achieve.

There are a number of different techniques that Plastic Surgery Specialists may employ when performing rhinoplasty in San Francisco, depending upon what results you want to achieve, and what methods we think will work best for you. Once the cartilage and bone have been molded into their new shape, your skin will then be replaced over them.

Depending on the results you want, there are many different methods that PSS may use to sculpt the shape of the nose throughout the surgery. As soon as the cartilage and bone have been molded into their new shape, your skin will then be replaced over them. The recovery time for a nose job depends on how much was done during the procedure, but it usually takes about two weeks to see all of the swelling and bruising go down.

Rhinoplasty in San Francisco- Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do all nasal surgeries create the “nose-job look”?

A: No. To the contrary, skillful nasal surgery results in a completely natural appearance. One doesn’t usually notice a beautiful nose on an individual. We tend to see noses that are out of proportion to the face. In other words a large hump or a drooping tip or wide fleshy nose in a thin face. The goal of nasal surgery is to match the size of the nose to the face and then all the parts of the nose to each other.

Q: How is nasal surgery done?

A: Most nasal surgeries today are performed utilizing what is called an open technique. Through a tiny incision across the under surface of the nose, the skin is separated from the skeleton and very exact changes are made in the shape. This creates more control in the changes made. For many years every patient had the same nasal surgery regardless of their size or facial shape. Modern surgeries strive to create balance.

Q: Should I have a chin implant at the same time as nasal surgery?

A: Again, this depends on facial balance. A very large nose with a receding chin would perhaps be better corrected by advancing the chin and reducing the nose rather than over operating on the nose alone. Chin implants can be placed via a very small incision and sized to create a natural result for the individual. In some cases, cheek implants may be suggested to create a better facial balance as well.

Q: What is the recovery from nose or chin surgery?

A: Normally, there will be a plastic splint on the nose for 4-7 days. Once the splint is removed, bruising is usually minimal and results are apparent almost immediately. Final resolution of swelling may require a few weeks and there may be some numbness or minor swelling for several months. However, today’s techniques allow the patient to return to normal activity within days.

Q: Is there a way to see what my new nose will look like?

A: At PSS we do pre-operative imaging. We take your photo and it is manipulated by the doctor on our computer to simulate your result.
