What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX is a trade name for the neurotoxin protein known as botulinum toxin. Injections of highly diluted botulinum toxin, or BOTOX Injections, have become one of the most common aesthetic procedures performed in the country, and certainly a favorite at Plastic Surgery Specialists. BOTOX Cosmetic Injections help our Marin, Napa, and Sonoma County patients significantly soften crow's feet, forehead lines and frown lines that appear on the face as we get older. They do this by blocking nerve impulses and thereby weakening the muscles into which the facial injections are introduced. However, because of its ability to rebalance facial muscles, BOTOX should be thought of as facial shaping rather than simply wrinkle removal. Less well known but also important is the fact that BOTOX Injections can be used successfully to offset hyperhidrosis, a medical condition that causes excessive (and sometime unpredictable) sweating.
Best Candidate for BOTOX Injections
The ideal candidates for BOTOX Injections are men and women who are in good health and who are concerned about lines and wrinkles appearing on their foreheads or around their mouths or eyes but don’t feel ready and/or inclined to have Brow Lift or Facelift surgeries at this time. Some people may be allergic to Botox, and some may have severe skin laxity issues that will benefit best from other procedures or other procedures in combination with BOTOX.
Meeting with your surgeon to consider your areas of concern and go over your medical history can ensure that Botox injections are appropriate for you. Patients from Greenbrae, Larkspur, Corte Madera, Mill Valley, Santa Rosa, and San Rafael who consult with our board-certified plastic surgeons about BOTOX injections will decide if the procedure is the best treatment for their cosmetic issues.
BOTOX Injections Procedure
BOTOX is injected directly into the areas of the facial muscles to be targeted through a very fine needle. A topical anesthetic can be applied to ensure comfort.
BOTOX Injections that achieve the desired results require experience and a comprehensive understanding of facial muscles and anatomy.
Post Botox Injections Procedure
If you work in Mill Valley or Greenbrae, your BOTOX procedure will be quick enough to accomplish during your lunch hour. It only takes a short time and most people can return to normal activities right away. In about a week, you will begin to experience a more youthful appearance.

- Is Botox actually a poison?
Botox is a toxin extracted from bacteria called Clostridia Botulinum. Although, this is the same bacteria that causes botulism, the toxin and Botox is diluted thousands of times and does not have deleterious effects.
- What areas of the face can be treated with Botox?
Dynamic wrinkles of the frown muscles between the eyebrows, transverse forehead lines, and crow’s feet lines around the eyes are the most common areas injected with Botox. More advanced techniques can improve the appearance of the area around the mouth, chin, or even neck.
- How long does Botox last?
This depends on the volume of Botox injected and the scale of which it is done. In general, we expect the results of Botox to last from 3-6 months depending upon the individual.
- Can Botox be combined with other facial fillers?
Yes, Botox is often combined with Restylane, Juvederm, or even your own autologous fat to create what is sometimes referred to as a liquid lift; In other words, rejuvenation without surgery. The key is creating an ongoing plan to maintain the effects of these treatments, which are usually transient in nature.
